When we leave our elderly in others’ care, we want the best medical and emotional care for them. We want them to be treated with kindness and compassion, and we always want them to be out of harm’s way. But when precautions are not taken and health guidelines aren’t followed, tragedy strikes our most vulnerable.

At The Weitz Firm, LLC, our Philadelphia nursing home abuse lawyers want to discuss a local nursing home abuse case when medical guidelines were ignored, and elderly people’s lives were lost.

What Happened In This Philadelphia Nursing Home Abuse Incident?

In September 2020, state and federal investigators raided a Pennsylvania nursing home where hundreds of residents and staff members tested positive for coronavirus. As a result, dozens have died. The facility, Brighton Rehabilitation, and Wellness Center just northeast of Pittsburgh had been under investigation for a while: The Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro stated that the facility was under investigation due to “deeply” troubling practices and conditions. “I can confirm that Brighton is one of the subjects of criminal investigations into neglect at nursing homes during the pandemic.”

The State Department of Health data show that 447 residents and staff members tested positive for COVID-19, and 73 people had died. At the time, it was the worst outbreak of the disease in Pennsylvania. The facility in Sept 2019 was cited for not having enough trained nurses and that residents lived in poor and dirty conditions.

Nursing Homes Should Provide Care Not Abuse
